Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar District has been carved out of areas falling in Ropar and Patiala district as 18th District of Punjab on 14th April 2006. Because of its contiguous with the union teritory of Chandigarh. The district has been formed to achieve growth of development as this area is emerging as major I.T.hub of Nothern India. The district includes Mohali, Kharar and Dera Bassi Teshils. It is located in the north east part of Punjab. and is part of Patiala division. The District includes 383 villages including 9 villages are un inhabitated. The important township in the district are Kharar, Kurali, Mohali, Zirakpur & Dera Bassi. Kharar block is the largest administrative unit of the district with 138 villages followed by Majri block with 116 villages.27 villages were newly added in the District Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar which were carved out from District Patiala.


The district is spread over geographical area of 1092.64  sq. kms. The rural area constitues 1021.77 sq.kms. as compared to urban area of 70.87 sq.kms.


As per 2011 census, the population of the district is 994628 out of which the rural population is 450017 & population of urban area is 544611. The male population of the district is 529253 out of which rural male population is 240984 whereas urban male population is 288269. The total female population of the district is 465375 out of which the rural female population is 209033 whereas urban females are 256342 . The SC population of the district is 216231 out of which rural SC population is 132713 & SC population in urban area is 83518 .


Mohali District has emerged as a major center of technical education. There are number of engineering colleges which offer variety of technical courses. The Punjab School Education Board is also operating in the district.

NIPER: A pioneer institute of pharmaceutical & education research is situated at Mohali.


There are number of renowed hospitals in the district which are equipped with latest technical know how. The FORTIS,IVY and Max Hospitals are one of its kinds with multi specialty facilities.


World class CRICKET STADIUM of international fame is situated at Mohali International tournaments are held from time to time and the people get an opportunity to watch the international cricket in action.


District Mohali is emerging as I.T Hub of North India. Some big companies like QUARCKS, DELL & TCS are already in business and having its establishments whereas others are in the process for opening their offices.

This block consists of 138 villages out of these there are 4 un-inhabited villages. As per 2011 census, the total population of the block is 178661 out of which 95857 males and 82804 females. The total SC Population in the block is 52562. The block is having total area of 31306 hectare.


Majri Block comprises of 116 villages out of which 1 village is un-inhabited. This block forms part of Kharar sub division. As per 2011 census , total population of the block is 96658 out of which 51601 are males and 45057 are female. The SC population of the block is 29531.The block is spread overan area of 26752 hectare. As per District Credit Plan 2015-16 of PNB lead bank , there are 31 branches operating which comprises of 16 branches of public sectors banks. 6 Pvt. Sector Banks, 4 branches of PGB and Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar central co-operative bank is having 5 branches.


This block consists of 102 villages out of which there are 3 un-inhabited villages. As per 2011 census, the total population of the block is 130246 out of which 69869 are males and 60377 are females. The total SC population of the block is 32975 .

This block is having total area of 26596 hectare.

Dera Bassi block has a good number of small scale units. Chemical paints, Steel tubes, plywood, handlooms and kntting of daris are some of the industries which have coffered good employment to a number of persons. The soil of the block is sandy to sandy loam
